  • The Number 1 Productivity Hack You’re Not Using

The Number 1 Productivity Hack You’re Not Using

In this video, I talk about the concept of text expanders and explore why they are an essential tool for anyone looking to enhance productivity and save time.

A text expander is a program that allows users to assign triggers to specific blocks of text, which are then automatically expanded when the trigger is typed. I highlight the versatility and benefit of text expanders in various professional fields, including writing, marketing, data input, customer service, medical professions, social media marketing, and academia.

I also discuss the significant time-saving potential of consistency, flexibility, ergonomic advantages, and cross-platform compatibility provided by text expanders. However, I do touch on the potential privacy concerns associated with text expanders, urging you to be cautious and select trusted and audited solutions.

I begin by emphasizing the simplicity and functionality of text expanders.

By using trigger words or phrases, individuals can streamline their writing process and reduce repetitive typing. Whether it’s filling out addresses, sending standard emails, or inputting data, text expanders can significantly enhance efficiency and reduce the time spent on mundane tasks.

I talk about the diverse range of professionals who can benefit from using text expanders. Writers can save time by using boilerplate phrases, marketers can streamline their outreach efforts, and customer service representatives can provide quick responses with pre-defined answers. Medical professionals can utilize text expanders for standardized codes and forms, while social media managers can respond to common queries and comments promptly. Even academics can benefit from text expanders when writing frequently cited phrases or references.

One of the key advantages of text expanders is their ability to save time. I share personal anecdotal evidence of the significant amount of time saved by using a text expander. By automating repetitive tasks, individuals can reclaim valuable time and channel it into more meaningful activities.

Another benefit of text expanders is the consistency they provide. Since text expanders ensure pre-defined responses and templates are inserted accurately, typographical errors and inconsistencies are minimized. This attention to detail enhances professionalism and reduces the likelihood of miscommunication in written forms.

Text expanders also offer flexibility and customization options. Users can create their own triggers, choosing phrases and shortcuts that make sense to them personally. This flexibility makes it easier to remember and use the tool consistently, thereby maximizing its benefits.

Furthermore, text expanders reduce strain on wrists, hands, and forearms, as less manual typing is required. By utilizing pre-defined text snippets, individuals can minimize repetitive motions, leading to fewer instances of discomfort or injury associated with extensive typing.

Finally, I cover the cross-platform compatibility of text expanders. Whether using a Mac, Linux, or Windows machine, text expanders can be seamlessly integrated into different operating systems, ensuring consistency and ease of use across platforms.

However, I urge you to be mindful of privacy concerns when selecting a text expander. While reputable programs do not compromise user data, I advise anyone with privacy concerns to opt for open-source solutions that have undergone audits, reassuring users that their keystrokes are not being logged or sent to external servers.

In conclusion, text expanders are powerful tools for increasing productivity and efficiency in various professional settings. By automating repetitive tasks, ensuring consistency, providing flexibility, reducing strain, and offering compatibility across platforms, text expanders have proven to be invaluable assets for individuals seeking to optimize their workflow. However, users should exercise caution and choose trusted solutions to address any potential privacy concerns.

In the video I’ve embedded, I’ll walk you through the setup process and show you how this plugin can transform your project management. But here’s the twist – there’s one thing that might drive you a little crazy.

Don’t worry though, I’ll help you decide if it’s a dealbreaker or not!

    Enjoy!

    Introduction:

Do you find yourself overwhelmed with a mountain of projects? Are you a stickler for tracking every single detail? Do you find traditional project management tools cumbersome and unappealing? If you answered yes to these questions, then the Projects Plug-In for Obsidian is the solution you’ve been searching for. In this blog post, we’ll dive into the benefits of using this plug-in and explore its features. By the end, you’ll have a clear understanding of how this tool can revolutionize your project management process.

Streamlining Project Management with the Projects Plug-In:

Imagine a world where managing multiple projects becomes effortless, where different perspectives and views of your projects can be easily accessed within a single interface. That’s precisely what the Projects Plug-In for Obsidian offers.

Graphical User Interface (GUI) Lovers Rejoice:

If you prefer working with a visual interface instead of traditional data views, then this plug-in is perfect for you. The Projects Plug-In provides a user-friendly GUI that allows you to effortlessly manage and organize your projects.

    Setting Up Your Projects:

To get started, you’ll need to create a new folder named “projects” in your Obsidian vault. All your projects will live within this folder. By accessing the command palette, you can quickly create new projects, assign default projects, and set data sources. This flexibility allows you to tailor your project management experience to your specific needs.

    Defining Project Details:

Within each project, you can set various parameters, including the project name, topic, tags, and important dates such as the filming or posting dates. The plug-in even offers the option to define custom templates for standard project formats, saving you time and effort.

    Organizing Projects:

The Projects Plug-In offers multiple views to help you navigate and manage your projects effectively. The board view allows you to create a Kanban-style pipeline, enabling you to track the progress of each project through different stages, such as scripting, filming, editing, and posting. You can also create a calendar view, which provides a visual representation of your projects’ timelines. Lastly, the gallery view allows you to see all your projects at a glance, making it easier to prioritize and plan your workflow.

    Tailoring Views to Your Needs:

Each view can be customized to fit your preferences. You can sort projects based on their names, dates, or tags. Additionally, you can assign colors to specific topics or tags, making it easier to identify and prioritize projects at a glance.

    Addressing Limitations:

While the Projects Plug-In for Obsidian offers incredible project management capabilities, it’s important to note a few limitations. Dragging and dropping projects vertically for manual rearrangement is not currently supported. Additionally, removing all cards from a column causes the column to disappear. However, you can create a placeholder card to maintain consistency within your workflow.

    Conclusion:

In this blog post, we’ve explored the Projects Plug-In for Obsidian and its powerful features. This plug-in provides project managers with a streamlined approach to managing multiple projects within a single interface. With its user-friendly GUI, customizable views, and the ability to define project parameters, the Projects Plug-In significantly enhances project management capabilities for Obsidian users. While it may have a few limitations, its benefits far outweigh any drawbacks.

So if you’re drowning in a sea of projects and yearn for a more efficient, intuitive way to manage them, give the Projects Plug-In for Obsidian a try. You won’t be disappointed.

  • Best Plug-In You Can Use To Change Your Life

Best Plug-In You Can Use To Change Your Life

My core life & business systems revolve around one program more than any other: Obsidian.md.

I’ve gone into excruciating detail about why I love it so much, but this is focused on helping you see exactly how I use it to shape my habits (and rest of my life since your whole life is nothing but the result of your habits).

The best strategies work with the fundamental principles that affect the system at play, and that’s why this plug-in is so good.

It helps me translate random numbers & data points into visual charts that I can understand WAY faster than if I was only looking at numbers.

Now, I can have my data spread out in my personal notes, and this plug-in will do all the hard work of 1) finding it & 2) making sense out of it for me.

    Incredible.

That’s why I highly recommend you give this video a watch all the way through if you’re even halfway interested in making big changes in your life.

  • Word Problems Made WAY Easier

    Word Problems Made WAY Easier

Math was probably my least favorite subject in school.

At the same time, there was one area that everyone else had trouble with that was easy for me: word problems.

When I could talk through the situation, everything made sense.

Flash forward decades later and now I can use that advantage in my business life.

Business is all about sustainable services or products.

Sustainable, in this case, means profitable.

Is this going to make me more money than it takes for me to make it happen?

    That’s it.

That’s the one formula to rule them all.

Sometimes, in order to find that answer, you have to do some complex math.

    Example?

What’s the ROI on my PPC campaign?

Well. To figure that out, you have to know your budget, the cost per click, the conversion rate of your website, your sales close rate, and the lifetime value of your average client.

Now you’re working with division & multiplication of percentages.

Good luck doing that with a calculator.

So you might use Excel or Google Sheets.

    I won’t.

I mean, I have, but now I don’t need to.

Not since I discovered this Obsidian plug-in, and that’s what the video’s all about.

    Enjoy!

  • The Single Most Effective Strategy I Use

The Single Most Effective Strategy I Use

This is the approach I’ve used to:

    • Write several books
    • Create online courses
    • Script many 70 minute shows
    • Architect email drip campaigns
    • Do lots of other stuff I can’t think of now

See, I consider myself a divergent thinker. Every idea I have can connect with 11 other ideas. Pretty soon I have a tangled web of potential topics that may or may not make sense to anyone who is reading this garbled mess.

How do I pick what to include? What to cut? What to talk about first? What goes next?

I can’t write it all out and then make those choices.

I also can’t make choices about something that only exists in my head.

There has to be some compromise. Some better way.

There is. And it’s called “mind mapping.”

It’s a way of making visual connections between ideas, and I couldn’t be a creator without it.

Obsidian makes this possible, AND it does it with every single note on hand.

This is the most powerful feature of Obsidian, in my book.

I don’t need to use one program for mind mapping & another program for taking notes.

With Obsidian, it’s all in one place. I’m in the same place to capture ideas, organize them, then fill them out into written form.

That’s why mind mapping with Obsidian is the heart of my approach to writing books, scripting videos, and anything else that uses words.

If you’ve ever wondered what my “secret” to being so prolific is, this is it.

And I put a lot of it into this weeks video.

So, go give it a watch, and give it a like if you find it useful at all.

    Best thoughts,
    ~Jonathan

  • Obsidian Properties: New Update Is Great

Obsidian Properties: New Update Is Great

Obsidian recently released an incredible update that makes YML, frontmatter, and metadata easier to use. . . IF you don’t screw it up like I did!

I’m not fond of using scripts & code (this is a major reason why I love Obsidian; you don’t need to use it!), but now I can have my cake and eat it too. I can use file properties to open up a whole new way of organizing my database, and I wanted to make this video for anyone else who might be like me & have avoided YML due to it’s heavy learning curve.

    Hope you enjoy!

  • Lore and Science in Ancient Pythagoreanism

Lore and Science in Ancient Pythagoreanism

    a2+b2=c2

Even if you slept through most of your high school math classes like I did, you still might recognize this as the “Pathagorean Theorem.”

Useful for figuring out the length of the hypotenuse of a right angle triangle when you know the lengths of the other two sides.

In case that’s not confusing enough, here it’s demonstrated with water:

I didn’t say that explains anything, but it IS a cool demonstration of the math in practice.

For 99.9% of the world this is where their interest of Pythagoras begins and ends.

But, man are they missing out.

Turns out that Pathagoras was weird.

    Super weird.

Like, start a secretive cult with none of the fun stuff weird.

    And I love it.

I’m about 3/5ths of the way through a book by a German author, Walter Burkert.

He’s exploring the influence that a man had on the entire history of Western thought & science. It’s a tough job for someone who lived several hundred years before Aristotle, never wrote anything down, and preferred to keep his secrets to himself.

The version I’m reading is the first edition translated into English, and it’s pretty easy to follow along with insofar as the English is concerned.

It’s the Greek that gets me.

As far as I can tell, the Greek is left untranslated.

Entire paragraphs are included, and there are oftentimes more footnotes on the page than actual paragraphs.

If I didn’t know any better I’d say I’m stuck in my own “House Of Leaves” nightmare.

It’s strange to me that there are copious footnotes about the research done to verify the authenticity of the particular phrase, and choose to leave it as-is.

Even with that speed bump, it’s still fascinating stuff.

Especially reading it with the eye of a magician.

It’s like a scholar trying to figure out a 2000 year old set list of a magic show based on the Facebook posts of audience members if they waited 400 years to share anything about it.

That alone is enough to keep me moving forward seeing what hints he can unravel.

Secondly, the ideas hidden away in the Pathagorean “Academy” are so wonderfully weird and insightful that I’d be a fool if I stopped reading.

There are so many parallels to art, magic, performance, and the ideas I explore within the space of my mind reading show.

I expect a lot of this will be incorporated into my routines and give new life to some of the more standard approaches I take with a couple pieces I’ve wanted to revamp.

I will post a full review with my thoughts once I finish the book which should be soon considering how captivating it is.

    Until then.

  • Privacy.com

    Privacy.com

    Behold Privacy.com.

It’s a service that creates virtual credit cards you can use to set up subscriptions, pay for things, and do it all while being able to set limits on how much that card can be charged for and/or can be shut down in a couple clicks.

With this service you’re essentially creating an airgap between your main bank account, and the vendor you’re paying.

    Personal Context

Many years ago I made the mistake of buying something online when I was at the Austin airport.

I was not using a VPN, and someone on the wi-fi network was able to snag my payment details.

By the time I landed in Pittsburgh, my account had been completely wiped out.

I didn’t have a lot of money to begin with, but the money I did have I really needed.

That led me to keeping most of my cash on hand in a separate account that’s not tied to any debit or credit card info. Then, as I need/want to pay for something, I do a bank transfer to move the appropriate amount into my “wallet” account that is tied to a debit card.

That way I could keep the bulk of my money away from anyone who would want to snag my details again.

With Privacy.com it looks like they’ve made that process as simple as making a couple clicks.

    Very cool.
